JPMorgan account targeted in Dieter Behring fraud

Switzerland has requested information about accounts at two United States based financial institutions as part of a criminal investigation into an alleged US$629 million fraud by hedge fund operator Dieter Behring and his Bahamas based Moore Park group of companies.

Ex-US prosecutor accused of tax evasion conspiracy

Offshore corporations in Anguilla, the Bahamas and St. Lucia, including one operating as a bank, have been implicated in an alleged conspiracy to defraud the United States Government of tax revenue.Details are contained in an indictment against four individuals, including one who is both a former U. Former Bahamas resident Derek Turner was sentenced to 20 years in prison on February 17 - six months after pleading guilty to three counts of wire fraud concerning a high-yield investment scam.Turner, a 56-year-old New Zealand national, was also ordered to pay restitution of $55 million at his sentencing at the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He immediately filed a notice of appeal against the judgment to the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Bahamas judge unfreezes fraud group’s assets, invites it to apply for damages

An attempt by the Attorney General of the Bahamas to confiscate the criminal proceeds of securities fraud firm Banakor Swisse S.A. spectacularly backfired last year after the group supplied the court with false information and the judge chose to believe the fraudsters over regulators and law enforcement agents. The AG obtained an order at Bahamas Supreme Court freezing the group's assets at The Royal Bank of Scotland (Bahamas) Ltd. on December 8, 2004 - just a few weeks after OffshoreAlert first exposed Banakor. However, after Banakor submitted affidavits that are replete with inaccurate and misleading information, Justice Jon Isaacs reversed his decision on June 13, 2005 and even awarded the crooks costs and invited them to apply for damages.

SSBT loses fight to regain its bank license

Bahamas-based Suisse Security Bank & Trust Ltd., which may be insolvent by as much as $29 million, has lost a four-year fight to regain its bank license. In a judgment issued yesterday, the Privy Council in the United Kingdom dismissed an appeal by SSBT against a ruling on June 29, 2004 by the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas that upheld the revocation of SSBT's license by the Governor of the local Central Bank, effective April 2, 2001.

Leadenhall Bank’s insolvency estimated at $11.3 m

Bahamas-based Leadenhall Bank & Trust Ltd., which was closed down by regulators seven months ago, may be insolvent by more than $11 million. That was the glum news for creditors in the first report of liquidator Craig A. (Tony) Gomez on December 9, 2005. On paper, the bank had shareholders' equity of $1.6 million as of October 3, 2005, with assets of $29,864,139, including $20.4 million in cash, and liabilities of $28,235,807. “However my review has revealed that the balance sheet includes loans and past due credit card receivables totaling $6.6 and $6.3 million, respectively, and that both balances are either unsecured or inadequately collateralized,” stated Gomez in his report.

Ex-Grenada Diplomat pleads guilty to fraud charges

An American who is suspected of bribing the Prime Minister of Grenada for appointing him to a diplomatic position has pleaded guilty to unrelated fraud charges in the United States.Eric Resteiner, 46, pleaded guilty to five counts of wire fraud and two counts of mail fraud at a change of plea hearing that was held at the U. S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on February 8, 2006. He is due to be sentenced on May 8. Under a plea agreement, the remaining 53 counts, including 18 regarding money laundering, which carry the harshest penalties, will be dismissed.

Three offshore-based businesses are suing a Florida law firm for more than $140 million in damages, alleging professional malpractice concerning a failed factoring business.A civil lawsuit was filed on August 10, 2005 at the U.
